The Channing Memorial Church Choir and Janet Grant, Music Director (R) March, 2015
Music connects us to transcending mystery and wonder, moving us to a renewal of the spirit.
Music stretches us to experience traditions and histories of diverse cultures and peoples through story and song.
Music inspires us to celebrate the sacred circle of life, and to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.
Music connects us to each other; joyfully, expressively, soulfully.
It is the first thing people hear in church - before the welcome, before the announcements, before the minister speaks: there are the stirring chimes, and the lovely organ or piano prelude.
Music sets the tone and helps to lend meaning to the worship experience. Music is at the heart of worship, and is a vital part of the life of Channing Church.
We of the Channing Music program, under the leadership of Music Director Janet Grant, seek to contribute to the integrity and spiritual value of worship in our congregation. We work to provide a varied, energizing, moving, challenging mix of auditory experiences.
In most services, Janet performs and accompanies on the organ or piano. The choir usually sings three times a month, and services are sometimes varied by the addition of instrumental and vocal music performed by outside musicians and by volunteer members and friends. Choir members learn to become better musicians and to use their voices more effectively as instruments in chorus. We typically rehearse weekly, before and after worship. We in the Choir know that a significant time commitment is required, but that the rewards make the time spent well worthwhile.
Interested parties can easily become aware of what we do and approach Janet or any other choir member. The Music Director works with Worship, Religious Education, Caregiving, Social Justice, and other committees to enhance and support their worship services, and also with the Minister as requested. We hope, through our music, to provide opportunities for personal connection: among friends in the Choir, and between musicians and the congregation.
